Should you get chartered?

For most engineering disciplines, Chartered Engineer (CEng) status is the difference between hitting a pay ceiling at £50–55k and breaking through to £65–85k+. Chartership signals technical competence, professional accountability, and typically unlocks project lead and engineering manager roles that require it.

The process varies by institution (ICE, IMechE, IET, IStructE, IChemE) but typically requires: 4–5 years of responsible experience, a competency submission, and a professional review interview. Most graduate schemes will have a chartership pathway. If yours doesn't, ask HR to sponsor you or switch to an employer who will.

Engineering CV tips — what works

Engineering CVs are heavily ATS-filtered before a human sees them. Key things that get you through:

  • List every software tool you use: AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, Revit, ANSYS, MATLAB, Python, Navisworks, Civil 3D — ATS filters on these
  • Include professional memberships: MICE, MIMechE, MIET, AMICE, GradIStructE — these matter for grading applications
  • Quantify project scope: value of projects, scale, team size
  • Include health and safety qualifications: IOSH, NEBOSH, CSCS card level
